Donnell Beverly
Year: 2007 - 2011
Position: Guard
Hometown: Hawthorne, California

Donnell Beverly is in his junior year as a Guard for the UConn Huskies.  Donnell came from a family of football players.  “I became interested in basketball because of my Dad.  He told me I should play three sports, basketball, football and baseball not just football.”  When he reached high school his mother suggested Donnell focus on one sport, and he chose basketball.  “Since making that decision, UConn is where it brought me, and I’m happy about that.”

Donnell’s best memory as a basketball player so far was the game against Indiana University last season.  “We were two players short, and I was given a chance to play, and help the team.  I played really good, we won, and that’s what matters.”

When Donnell arrived at UConn for his visit he knew he had to come, and play for Connecticut.  “I was a late signee, and I made my decision to come to UConn as soon as I came on my visit.  I liked the university, the basketball program, and the coaches.  I knew the history of UConn basketball, and I knew this was the place for me.”

The transition from high school to college has been “crazy” as Donnell described it.  In high school he was used to his coach just telling him to take over the game.  There is a lot more team work at UConn.  “I’m an unselfish player, and I love playing basketball with these guys.  It’s a lot of fun.”

Final Four Bound:  Donnell is hopeful to get to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Final Four in Detroit this year.  “As long as we play together as a team, we dedicate ourselves to what Coach Calhoun wants us to do, we’ll get to Detroit, and hopefully win the whole thing.”
