Omar Calhoun is in his freshman year as a Guard for the UConn Huskies.  He was introduced to basketball at a young age. "When I was little my dad put a basketball in my hands and that was it.  Both my parents played basketball and my sister plays. (Omar's sister Sierra, a junior in high school is being recruited by the UConn women's coaching staff.)

Omar's most memorable experience so far was winning the State Championship as a sophomore at Christ the King High School. "I always like to win so that experience alone definitely made me feel good about myself.  My greatest moments are about coming to play and winning."

Omar made his decision to come to UConn at the end of his junior year of high school.  "I came here on a visit.  I had a great relationship with the coaches.  I knew the players before I came.  It was a family before I came here and I wanted to be a part of it."

The transition from high school to college was not that difficult regarding basketball.  Omar was the star of his high school team but has experienced playing in All-Star games consisting of many stars so coming to UConn among a lot of stars was similar. "Everyone here at UConn gets along, all willing to play their role and we all want to win. We all have the same goal in mind so we should be fine."

The transition academically was a little more challenging. "In high school the classes are small, thirty or less students. It's easier to work together and do work on the chalkboard and go over it as a class.  In college the classes are all in big lecture halls with lots of students so I had to adjust to that."

When asked what it takes to make Coach Ollie happy, Omar said, "Working hard, giving 110% every day. That's what he believes in, working your hardest and leaving it all out there on the court."
