Kemba Walker is in his junior year as a Guard for the UConn Huskies. He became interested in basketball as youngster because all his friends played, and he was pretty good at it.
As a junior and co-captain this year, Kemba will be one of the leaders on this young team. How will he lead the team, “Just being a vocal leader, be more talkative, and be more interactive with my teammates.”
Although Kemba had a couple of most memorable moments to date he said the Virgin Islands Tournament as a freshman was at the top of his list. “The Virgin Islands, winning that tournament was my most memorable. It was just a great overall team effort, the whole tournament. I enjoyed that team a lot.”
When asked what makes Coach Calhoun happy, Kemba laughed and said, “A National Championship.” Then he followed with, “If we stay together as a team all the time, and just give 110% every time you step on the court, I think he’ll be all smiles.”
Getting back to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament this year is going to take a lot of hard work. “It’s going to take a lot of sacrifices from myself, from Alex (Oriakhi), and Bev (Donnell Beverly). We’ve gotta play extremely hard to get back to the tournament.”
Thoughts on new assistant coach Kevin Ollie: “He’s just got so much to offer. Having been in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for several years, he has a lot of information to give to me so I love him. He’s got a lot of energy just like myself, so everything he tells me, I just soak it in.”
Kemba’s most memorable basketball experience before UConn was being selected to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game. “To be recognized as one of the best players in the country and to show my talent in front of everyone was definitely memorable.”
His decision to play for UConn was an easy one. “I grew up watching UConn on television. It was my dream school. Coach Calhoun, a Hall of Fame coach, prepares guys to play at the next level.”
