Maya Moore is in her junior year as a Forward for the UConn Huskies. She became interested in basketball around the age of six or seven when she started playing in the YMCA league.

“My most memorable experience so far at UConn was when the horn went off ending the National Championship Game, we won, it was pretty exciting.” Maya’s most memorable basketball highlights before UConn are having won three state championships in high school, and going undefeated her senior year. “It was just amazing to have the whole school behind us, and to go out on top like that, I’ll always remember that.”

There were many reasons why Maya chose to go to UConn. “I feel it’s a well-rounded place with great academics, and of course a great basketball program. Every year they contend for a National Collegiate Athletic Association Championship, and that’s appealing to me.” The environment, the fans, and the basketball atmosphere made it an easy choice for Maya.

Having now completed two years at UConn, Maya said there were definitely some transitions she was faced with along the way. “The college game is faster, more physical, and your athletic ability won’t carry you. You have to be tougher than in high school. Good chemistry on the team and taking the responsibility of making yourself better, spending more time in the gym, the weight room, and taking care of your body are factors too.”

Final Four Bound: When asked what it will take to get back to the Final Four this year Maya said, “How well our team adjusts, and adapts to the seen and unforeseen challenges we’re faced with. Whatever team is able to do that, will most likely be the team that wins it all.”
